The Kelabit Highlands, north-eastern corner of Sarawak State in Malaysian Borneo

The Kelabit Highlands is located in the remote north-eastern corner of Sarawak State in Malaysian Borneo. Bario is the largest settlement with an airport, a tiny town centre, small restaurants, an internet shop, a police station, a clinic, a church and several tribal longhouses. A network of jungle trails connects the many small settlements in the highlands and offers excellent hiking opportunities! Each settlement is nestled in golden green rice fields and dotted with tribal longhouses.

The highlands are home to the Kelabit, one of Boneo's smallest ethnic tribes with a population of around 5000, less than a third of whom live in the highlands. The younger generation in particular has moved to the cities for higher education and better careers.

A typical walk through Bario takes you past lolling water buffaloes by the lush rice fields, children frolicking nearby and farmers tilling their land. And only in the Kelabit highlands will you see strangers smiling as they greet you at the roadside. The Kelabit are some of the friendliest people in Malaysia.
